Interesting Tid Bits About the Missouri River

  • The Missouri River is the longest river in the US (2,341 miles)

  • Known as the "Big Muddy" or the "Mighty Mo"

  • There is a 160 mile stretch through Montana that is considered the most remote area in the lower 49

  • The Missouri Watershed provides more than 1/3 the coutnries wheat, flax and oats

  • The river runs through 7 states: Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas and Missouri

  • Lewis & Clark, in 1804, were the first to travel the entire lenght of the river

  • In 2024, 21 known travelers attempted the trip, but ONLY 10 finished

  • The name Missouri is derived from the Indian name meaning  "people of the wooden canoe"

  • Approximately every 3 minutes, one person in the US is diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma.

  • An estimated combined total of 187,740 people in the US are expected to be diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma in 2024.

  • New cases of leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma are expected to account for 9.4 percent of the estimated 2,001,140 new cancer cases that will be diagnosed in the US in 2024.

  • The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is the largest nonprofit funder of leading-edge research for every type of blood cancer, including leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, and other rare types of blood cancers.

  • Since 1949, LLS has provided more than $1.8 billion to the best and the brightest blood cancer researchers and biotech companies to support their groundbreaking research.

  • The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society also directly supports patients through grant money that helps cover treatment costs, travel expenses and more!

This trip will be just over 3,000 miles long and will be completed in approximately 60 days 

​

The trail traverses 7 states

​

TX is 1/3 of the ENTIRE trip! 

​

The highest point is Emory Pass in NM at 8228ft

​

Interesting Tid Bits About the Appalachian Trail

The AT is the longest “hiking-only” footpath in the world.

​

It is roughly 2,200 miles of hiking trail through the Appalachian Mountain Range in the Eastern United States

​

The Trail travels through 14 different states

​

The elevation gain/loss of hiking the entire Appalachian Trail is the equivalent of climbing Mount Everest 16 times.

​

Less than 15,000 people have completed a successful thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail. Even more interesting (particularly when applied to this story), since 1958, less than 500 people, 60 and over, have thru-hiked the AT.

​

Each year, 2500 people attempt to thru-hike the AT, Only about 625 make it. 

​

About Frank

Frank, a Father of 3, Papa of 7 never sits still for long! He is passionate about exploring and conquering new quests and is always looking forward to the next one!

In 2019, Frank embarked on his life long dream of hiking the AT, which he accomplished over a 5 month period! Just over a year later, in November 2020, he spent 8 weeks biking from San Diego, CA to New Smyrna Beach, FL.

Ten months after returning home, in November of 2021, Frank was diagnosed with a rare form of Lymphoma. The outlook was not promising, but Frank prevailed and is doing better than ever! It was one more conquered quest , albeit unplanned. 

He is now embarking on a canoe trip along the Missouri River and will be raising money and awareness for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
